TRUE Rating Tool

How does your car measure up?

The TRUE Rating Tool is a three-color categorization system designed to concisely inform those in Europe of the magnitude of a vehicle’s emissions over its lifetime under a wide range of operating conditions and driving behaviors.

While new vehicles are by definition certified to emissions levels at or below the legal limit, real-world measurements are often much higher.

Higher emissions could be due to a variety of reasons:

  • Ageing of emissions control systems
  • Software that increases emissions during normal driving (aka defeat devices)
  • Malfunction of engine or emissions control parts
  • Driving conditions outside of those covered by the regulations.

Emissions can also be affected in a positive way by recalls and retrofits. Our ratings reflect all these factors

The TRUE Rating Tool currently covers nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions from passenger cars measured across Europe and differentiates vehicle models by European Union emissions standards (Euro standards) from Euro 1 through Euro 6. Improvements to Euro 6, known as Euro 6d-TEMP and 6d, for which on-road testing became mandatory for type approval, are also reflected in the results.

Green (Good emissions performance): Vehicles that we are confident have NOx emissions that stay below 90 mg/km in a wide range of driving conditions.
Yellow (Moderate emissions performance): Vehicles that we are confident emit between 90 and 180 mg/km of NOx in a wide range of driving conditions, as well as vehicles that do not clearly fall into green or red.
Red (Poor emissions performance): Vehicles that we are confident have NOx emissions that stay above 180 mg/km in a wide range of driving conditions.
